As a university student myself, I understand that we are busy with juggling school and work. I hope this article will encourage you all to try to apply for scholarships.
Here are the benefits to applying for scholarships:
1.Faster Return on Investment than working
You could put in one month of work (60 hours) and earn between $1,700-$1,900 in income or you could put in 5 hours per month of volunteering and 10 hours to submit a total of 10 applications, earning $1,000-$5,000 for the month. Which one is a better use of time? It's a no brainer! My trick is to volunteer for a student club that aligns with my program of study as a director or VP and I recycle/copy and paste my winning letter of intent.
2. $5,000,000 goes unclaimed annually because people do not apply
According to CBC news, students in Canada do not realize that $5M annually goes unclaimed simply because students are not applying for scholarships and bursaries. It's important that students do not miss out, especially my international students. I think the myth that you need to have high marks really turns a lot of students away from applying for scholarships. I am here to set the facts straight; only 33% of scholarships require an 80%+ GPA.
3. Domestic vs International Tuition Fees
It is important to point out that domestic students pay lower tuition fees than international students because domestic fees are subsidized by Ontario taxpayers. Additionally, OSAP is inaccessible to international students. The average tuition for college schooling in Ontario as a international student is $30,000 per year. Meanwhile, the average Canadian university program costs $10,000 per year for domestic students. By law, an international student can only work part time at a maximum of 20 hours per week. Working while going to school will still leave an international student in debt. This is why scholarships are key!
